The European Parliament just voted to ban meat-related terms like “burger”“sausage”“steak” and “escalope” for plant-based foods, sparking major backlash from consumer and environmental groups.

Supporters say it’s about “clarity” and protecting farmers, while critics argue it’s patronizing.
“Don’t think consumers are stupid,” said Green MEP Thomas Weitz, pointing out that people clearly know a “vegan burger” isn’t meat.

The ban would restrict 29 terms (like beef, chicken, bacon, ribs, wings, breast) to animal products only — similar to how plant-based “milk” already has to be sold as a “drink.”

Over 400 organizations have signed an open letter urging the EU to drop the proposal, calling it a blow to consumer choice, sustainability, and innovation.
The plan still needs approval from EU member states.
